Dr. Cammisa Dr. Cammisa is a specialist in spinal surgery. He is Chief of the Spine Service and an Associate Attending Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, one of America's leading orthopaedic hospitals. He is an Assistant Attending Surgeon at New York Hospital and a Consultant to the Burke Rehabilitation Center, Spinal Cord Injury Unit.

He holds a faculty position at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City as an Associate Professor of Surgery (Orthopaedics). A frequent presenter, lecturer and instructor at professional conventions and symposiums held nationally and internationally, he is published regularly in books and professional journals. He appears annually on the lists of Best Doctors published by Castle Connolly Guide and New York Magazine.

Well-recognized as a pioneer in the use of new surgical techniques, procedures and modalities, Dr. Cammisa often participates - at times as principal investigator - in research and investigative studies. Current research is involved in computer assisted image guidance, demineralized bone matrix, minimally invasive spinal surgery, endoscopic spinal surgery, and bone growth enhancement. His special clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, microsurgery, computer assisted spinal surgery, athletic spinal injuries, cervical spine surgery, fractures, deformities and spondylolithesis.

Dr. Cammisa created The National Spinal Research Foundation and has been affiliated with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Long active in working with professional, scholastic and recreational athletes, including members of the Giants and Jets football teams, he is a spinal consultant to several area colleges and sports teams.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as a member of the North American Spine Society, Cervical Spine Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society, International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine, and American Spinal Injury Association.

A graduate of Tufts University and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Dr. Cammisa trained at Hospital for Special Surgery and became a Fellow in Spinal Surgery at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery at The University of Miami, Jackson-Memorial Medical Center, and The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.

Dr. Girardi Dr. Girardi is an Assistant Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, an Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and an Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at Bronx VA Medical Center.

In his surgical practice, Dr. Girardi specializes in treating spinal problems due to degenerative conditions (disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, stenosis), deformity (scoliosis, kyphosis, flat-back), metabolic (osteoporosis), fractures, and tumors of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.

He has done extensive clinical research involving the areas of minimally invasive surgery, clinical outcomes of different surgical procedures, alternatives to spinal fusion for degenerative disc disease, and imaging modalities of the spine. He has published on these and other topics in professional journals and has presented his findings in national and international spine conferences. He is also involved in the study of the basic science aspects of bone, disc and nerve tissue regeneration.

Dr. Girardi is a member of the North American Spine Society, Scoliosis Research Society, European Spine Society, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, and Spine Arthoplasty Society. A medical school graduate of the Universidad Nacional de Rosario in Argentina, he spent his spine surgery fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery.

Andrew A. Sama, M.D.     top of page

Dr. Sama Dr. Sama is a spinal surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery specializing in the surgical management of all conditions effecting the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral spine. Dr. Sama is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and was previously the Director of Orthopedic Spine Surgery at New York Hospital Queens. He is the director of Education for the Spine Surgical Service at Hospital for Special Surgery.

Dr. Sama graduated Cum Laude from the University of Miami and the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed an internship in General Surgery and four years of residency in Orthopaedic surgery at the University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in Spine and Scoliosis Surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery.

He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and a nationally invited lecturer.

Dr. Sama has performed research and published in the areas of complex spinal reconstruction and correction of Scoliosis, kyphosis and flat back deformities. He is the Principle Investigator of an FDA trial studying the use of stem cells in spinal fusion. He is involved in studies to assure patient safety and improve outcomes in orthopaedic and spinal surgery.

He is interested in minimally invasive techniques for correction of Deformity and degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. Dr. Sama has helped to design and develop new instruments to improve the technical aspects of spinal surgery.
